we love reading!
'The more you read, the more things you will know.
The more you learn, the more places you'll go.'
- Dr Seuss
Taking the time to read for pleasure is really important to us at GFS. We understand how reading enlarges our personal world and opens up new worlds of meaning and understanding which we may not have known existed previously. We know the joy of opening a book's fresh pages for the first time and the heartache of finishing the last line of a really good story. To us, books are sources of inspiration, knowledge, comfort, and challenge and we know that part of what makes reading so enjoyable is that it is not always easy. Understanding what an author is trying to communicate to us as readers takes time, effort, skill, and - most importantly - a growth mindset.
We undertake several dedicated independent reading sessions each week and the work we do in English lessons centres around challenging and thought-provoking reading material. Most importantly, we ensure that reading is a relaxed and enjoyable activity. As you can see from the photographs of our reading sessions below, some pupils prefer to read on the floor!
